Betsy
Carr
www.thefoundling.com
Betsy Carr lives in Asheville, NC just a few miles
down the road from the little mountain town she
grew up in.

Her husband, Stephen, her studio assistant, Crystal
and Betsy make foundling happen from a basement
studio. The dogs also help. The cats
plot against her. Betsy is happiest when she
has a project of some sort in hand and has loved
that sort of thing ever since she was a little girl. Even
so, her path to becoming a professional artist was
convoluted. She didn’t take an art class until
her third year in college. When she finally
did, it felt so right that she couldn’t do anything
else. She has a wall in her studio where she
is always tacking up vintage illustrations, little
collages, paint chips in her favorite colors, drawings
from her sketchbook, old fabric scraps and anything
else she is loving at the moment. When something
she’d like to make finally takes root, it’s obvious
to her that it grew out of looking at those little
treasures so much. Betsy tries to set aside
studio time to just work on new ideas. She
often finds out that what she had in mind won’t
work out so well for one reason or another and ends
up making several versions of one piece before settling
on a design she likes. Even then, she’ll live
with a piece for a few weeks before putting it out
into the world.
Betsy Carr is inspired by old and forgotten things;
anything that has faded or tarnished; things that
smell faintly of mildew and dust. She loves
repurposing things that have outlived their first
purpose. Betsy hopes that her work will be
loved and worn by people who imagine the adventures
all these scraps of fabric, baubles and old, brittle
pages had before they reached their hands – and
that they might take them on some of their own. |
